“Modern Marriage washed up one day on the tide in the Mersey estuary (somewhere close to Rock Ferry) and almost immediately started attracting attention as one of Merseyside’s most original and organically unpretentious bands, blending infectious melodies with the humour, grit and storytelling of their Northern roots. Formed in 2021, the band made their onstage debut at Liverpool’s legendary Cavern Club and have shared bills with Half Man Half Biscuit, Edgar Jones, Alan McGee and many more, building a reputation for high-energy sets packed with dry wit and crowd-pleasing charm.”

Modern Marriage are delighted to announce the release of their debut album ‘Grim Up North’. The album showcases the band’s signature blend of chimey, Rickenbacker-driven guitar pop and twisted, highly observational storytelling. The songwriting explores the weird, the wonderful and the mundanity of everyday life; from the petty-crime-noir of opener ‘Terry’s Last Fag,’ the misadventures of an octogenarian banjo player in ‘Gerry and His Pacemaker,’ and culminating with the Velvet Underground-meets-Crosby Stills and Nash epic ‘You Can’t Send Yer Ma To Blackpool’ – the story of trying and failing to combine football away days with family holidays.

The band are delighted and honoured to release the album on Skeleton Records – the legendary Birkenhead-based punk/indie label, recently revived after more than 40 years – and the album is available for purchase on LP, CD and digital download. The album is also live on Spotify and all other major streaming services. Rumours are afoot that the band have already recorded the follow-up album, which is scheduled for release in 2027…
